FINAL TEST IN CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH GRAMMAR

    The students had studied all the topics in the syllaby and do several activities to practise their knowledge in this area. Now, grammar does not stand alone but it involves people's mind and act. Therefore, every component in grammar use always portrait what actually people do in their real life. This idea comes from initially from the theory of SFL (Systemic Functional Grammar) proposed by Halliday. His idea has been further applied in many areas of English use. To fulfill my subject's requirement, you have to submit your answers in this blog's comment column maximum on Tuesday, 21 december 2021, at 12 a.m. Please open this link to do the final test.

    1, Simple Present Tense and Present Continuous Tense are the most used tenses.
    in my opinion, Global warming is, in fact, a world problem that is currently happening right now around us. The use of Simple present tense and Present continuous tense is a sign that humans should worry and face global warming. At this point, we have witnessed the destructive phenomenom like floods and rising temperature. And if we are not prioritizing this problem, we will have harder devastating consequences in the future.
    2. Action verbs : to expand
    Helping verb : might really kick in
    There are no linking verbs found in the article.
    I think The article doesn’t have much variety of verbs kinds, but it is still easily understandable.

    3, Coastal communities and island nations must brace for more water-related destruction. And world leaders must continue trying to restrain global emissions.
    Coastal communities really depends on sea riches as their income. With this water-related problem like rising sea water, their income sources be lost.

    4, in my own opinion, the topic is really interesting. Right now we are facing the devastating threat of global warming, and it is a reminder for us to not just relax on this life threatening situations.
    In my own opinion, I think the article is grammatically correct overall and I honestly didn’t find any grammatical errors on it. I wish the article gave more details and specific information about the topic.

    1.Type of tenses that the most used by the writer in the article is present continous tense. We can see it in the first paragraph "The world’s massive ice stores are melting" that means the ice are melting right now and when we read the text completely we can see that the ice will melting continously according to what the scientist already found out.

    2. The article is mostly included verb 1 and 2. Because it telling what was the scientist found, what happen with antartica's iceberg and what will happen in few years ahead.

    3. The text "Humanity should not test whether unrestrained warming will catastrophically reshape the world’s coastlines. As is the case with so many other potential climate consequences, allowing this gamble to play out is not worth the risk." means that nowadays modern culture and human life style could be serious thread for antartica and the iceberg. Human's daily activities like riding car or motorcycle, industrial pollution, and deforestation can cause thinness of ozon layer and causing global warming so as written in third paragraph, "Rain in typically frigid places such as Greenland can make the surface ice darker — and therefore more prone to absorb solar radiation, causing more melting", nowadays human culture can causes big disaster and threat for the future generation.

    4. This text's grammar is simple but easy reading. Even with only 6 paragraphs, the writter has pouring many information and news. It's so simple yet so clear.

    1. Present continuous tense, Simple Present Tense, simple future tense, previously, natural events like global warming were a fact, they did happen, as the article says, "As bad as it looks now, the glacial melt may occur after the middle of the century — and sea-level rise promises to be even worse after the mid-century." the year 2100," the researchers have collected data from the past year, the present, they have even made some predictions for the next few years, even so, we must remain vigilant, and must maintain the balance of nature.
    2. In the article, there are not too many verbs, from my understanding the author includes more v1 and v2 because they explain more about natural events, but the explanations are more than adequate to be understood.
    3. In the sentence, "Disasters related to sea level over the past decade, such as the 2012 great flood caused by Hurricane Sandy in New York, have served as a warning," can be interpreted as those all-natural disasters that have occurred, it can also be caused by his own human behavior, and refers to subsequent sentences such as, "Sea level rise and ocean warming is a generational threat that will hit the nation's children and grandchildren much harder," meaning that we as humans need to be more concerned about the environment and be aware of the unpredictable natural disasters that will occur in the future if we don't take care of this nature, there will be many other potential climate consequences, let this gamble be played unchecked worth the risk.
    4. In the article, the topic of the article is already interesting for readers to want to read it, but the discussion in it is still lacking in my opinion, but for the grammar and grammar, readers can feel at home reading it, and the use of words is easy to understand, maybe there are some words that still float outside the vocabulary mastered.

    1. The type of tenses used by the author in the article is the present continuous. The meaning of the present continuous itself is a sentence that shows an action or event that is happening now, often happens, and can continue. The events in the article say that "The world's major ice shops are melting right now"

    2. This lesson consists mostly of verb 1 and therefore tells about what scientists have discovered about what is happening in Antarctica and what will happen in the next few years.

    3. Coastal communities and island nations must be prepared for more air-related issues. And world leaders must continue to work to contain global emissions. Coastal communities really value the wealth of the sea as their income. With water problems such as rising sea levels, their source of income is lost.

    4. I think this article is very easy to reach and interesting to read and the grammar is also easy to understand

    1. In this article I found that the most widely used are the simple present tense and the present continuous tenses, the use of these 2 tenses is to increase human awareness that global warming is not something that can be taken lightly because it is not only happening for now and in a short time, if people still underestimate this, global warming will continue to occur in the future and will get worse. It has been proven by irregular changes in temperature, floods that often occur unexpectedly, and much more, if this is allowed to continue, it is possible that global warming could destroy the entire universe in the future.

    2. In this article I can find that there are 2 very familiar verbs used, namely; (1) Helping verb : night really kick in., (2) Action verb : to expand. This article does not seem to use many types of verbs but it can be understood easily, this article is a solid and clear article.

    3. Coastal communities and island nations must brace for more water-related destruction. And world leaders must continue trying to restrain global emissions.
    Coastal communities really depends on sea riches as their income. With this water-related problem like rising sea water, their income sources be lost.

    4. I think this topic is very good and so interesting, because it discusses the phenomenon that we are currently experiencing, namely global warming which is very threatening to the sustainability of the universe, this seems to be a reminder alarm for all of us that the world is not doing well, the world is not joking, but the world is on the brink, between destruction and safety (if we are all aware of the threat of global warming).
    For the grammar as a whole I think it is very good and there are no errors, it's just that I hope the contents of this article can be made more specific and detailed, and I also hope that this article will be very useful for both the readers.

    Lessons : Contemporary English Grammar

    1.) Simple present tense, and Present continous tense are the most used tenses by the writer.
    - As an example that I took in the text, as we know that global warming is a fact, and from the simple present explanation itself in its use it can serve to state facts (including scientific facts)
    -While the Present continuous tense in its meaning, are English tenses that are used to show an action or event that is happening at the time the conversation is taking place. As we know the topic in this article is global warming that is currently happening / is happening, of course in this article there are many sentences that lead to that topic.
    2.) - linking verbs: There are still many uncertainties (4th paragraph)
    - helping verbs: world governments must address this problem now (1st paragraph)
    - intransitive: threatening, melting (2&3 paragraph)
    ``` these are some of the verbs that I mentioned that are used in the article, by using these verbs reading can be easily understood in my opinion.
    3.) * Rising sea levels and warming oceans are a generational threat that will hit the country's children and grandchildren much harder. As bad as it seems now, glacial opening might actually happen after mid-century — and sea level rise will be even worse after 2100. Even if the net impact of Antarctica's discoveries is muted, and even if Greenland's ice remains miraculously solid, higher global temperatures will cause the air already in the oceans to expand.
    = The sentences above are related to each other discussing glacial melting which will cause sea water to expand
    4.) I think the topic discussed in this article is quite interesting because people will really need this kind of information, and also this topic is good to be a reminder to the public about the dangers of global warming.
    1. Simple present tense and Present continuous tense are the types of tenses that are most often used in this article. Because, we can see. In the first paragraph we are immediately shown the use of the present continuous tense, namely in the sentence "The world's massive ice stores are melting" and also in the sentence "researchers are only beginning".
    2. -Transitive verb: in the second paragraph, namely in the section "new satellite images showing that the eastern ice shelf abutting the massive Thwaites Glacier is cracking and could break up within the next few years." The use of transitive verbs is also seen in "The Post's Sarah Kaplan reports that, in the Arctic, perilous climate feedbacks threaten to initiate dangerous downward spirals".
    -modal verb: in the sentence "world governments must tackle the problem now." And there are many other examples.
    3. "Coastal communities and island nations must brace for more water-related destruction. And world leaders must continue trying to restrain global emissions."
    These two sentences are connected and related to each other. Where the first sentence explains what coastal communities and island nations must accept, and the other sentence explains that not only do coastal communities and island nations accept them, but world leaders must continue to strive and strive to contain global emissions.
    4. In my opinion, this article very interesting and informative. The use of tenses and simple vocabulary makes the article easy for readers to understand.
    1). Most types of tenses used by the writer in this article is present continuous, the relationship between present continuous with global warming is because global warming is still happening right now, that's why the writer uses the present continuous tense. The present continuous is used when the event is happening or still happening.
    2). This article uses several verbs, including :
    1. Action verb : Hit, holds, move, initiate, make, showing.
    2. Infinitives : to evaluate, to absorb, to restrain.
    3. Modals : Must continue trying, can make the surface ice darker.
    3)."Rain in typically frigid places such as Greenland can make the surface ice darker — and therefore more prone to absorb solar radiation, causing more melting."
    => The explanation for this sentence is that the frequent occurrence of rain in cold places like Greenland makes solar radiation more susceptible and that can result in more removal. The linking sentence here is 'and therefore' which is connected between cause and effect.
    4). The topics discussed in this article are very interesting and can make our insight even wider about global warming. The grammar used is also very easy to understand.
    1. in the article above. The writer uses present perfect continuous and simple past tense. The situation described in the article is a situation that shows the current time, the explanation of the time that shows it is "The world's massive ice stores are melting" so it can be said that global warming is still happening and is happening.
    2. “The world's massive ice stores are melting, and researchers are only beginning to evaluate what that means”
    sentence connections are in the "and" which is connected to the previous sentence. then, when an event that occurs in the first sentence causes the researchers to take action on that event to prevent something bad for the human population
    3. # action verbs:
    tackle, play, move, adding
    # linking verbs;
    have been, are, is
    I only found a few words because many of the words I read for the first time were not understandable. but for the information presented in the article it can be easily understood even though I found some words difficult.
    4. the use of grammar in the article is understandable, but there are some combinations of words that I have never read before, found in the first paragraph of the second sentence, the beginning of the sentence. for all the information conveyed is understandable.
    1. The tense that is widely used in writing articles is the present continuous tense, “is likely to shatter into hundreds of icebergs,” “that the eastern ice sheet bordering the massive Thwaites Glacier is cracking and may break in the next few years”, as expressed by the sentence where the current and future events happen in the future.
    2. the article uses the verb:
    Action verbs :shatter, move, remain, Hit
    3. “world leaders must continue trying to restrain global emissions”Leaders must be able to overcome global warming starting from reducing greenhouse gases. “Humanity should not test whether unrestrained warming will catastrophically reshape the world’s coastlines” humanity should guard against warming instead of testing warming
    4. I think this article is very good for current and future generations, how dangerous global warming is, so it is better to prevent and not test how strong the impact of global warming is. And also the article is easy to understand from the grammar which is not so difficult.
    1. In this article, there are 2 tenses that mostly use the present continuous tense and the simple future tense. If the simple continuous tense is located in the first paragraph, the last sentence says that “world government must tackle the problem now” because it is happening now. And for the simple future tense, the second paragraph says that ''who presented this month new satellite images showing that the eastern ice shelf abutting the massive Thwaites Glacier is cracking and could break up within the next few years'' can be said as future because events in this month and already represents future events.
    2. In this article, many people use verb 1 and verb 2 because in this article it says something is happening now, not what happened in the past. And this article is also easy to understand.
    3. In the article it says "Coastal communities and island nations must brace for more water-related destruction". This means that humans have to preserve nature more so that there is no damage that occurs. Humans must also be proud of the natural wealth we have, therefore we must preserve our nature. Because destroying nature has many consequences.
    1. simple past future , simple present tense
    because this article discusses the melting of the iceberg in Antarctica, it makes me think that most of the tenses used by the author are simple present tense, while several paragraphs explain that there was a flood disaster in 2012 in New York including the simple past tense.
    2. -Transitive verb: move, reports, initiate, make, absorb, disturb, hit, cause, continue, restrain
    - Intransitive verb: rise, remain, play
    - Primary verb: have, do, is , are
    - Modal verb: could, will, must, should, can, would, might
    reshape, would accumulate, must tackle, must brace, must continue, can make
    - To+infinitive: to evaluate, to face, to shatter, to initiate, to absorb, to be, to restrain, to play
    3. "Once gone, the enormous mass of glacial ice that the shelf currently holds back will move toward the sea at three times its current rate, threatening a substantial boost in rising sea levels. Meanwhile, The Post’s Sarah Kaplan reports that, in the Arctic, perilous climate feedbacks threaten to initiate dangerous downward spirals."
    These two sentences are have a connection. The first sentence shows the first situation of the glasiccal ice in Antartica and its current situation that create some threats. And then the second sentence shows another similiar situation in Arctic with a different rate to make some comparison and also tell the reader that there is another threat beside the first problem.
    4. My opinion about the grammar in this article is very good and what is meant in this article is also very easy to convey to the readers, the language is not too complicated, making it easier for readers to understand what the author is saying.
    1. present continuous tense because the sentence in this article shows an action or event is happening now and continues into the future. for example: "The world's massive ice stores are melting, and researchers are only beginning to evaluate".     2. use verbs 2 and ing. because it tells what has happened in the past, and is currently happening
    3. "Coastal communities and island nations must brace for more water-related destruction". teach humans not to destroy nature, and continue to protect and preserve it
Example: "According to Oregon State University's Erin Pettit, who presented this month new satellite images showing that the eastern ice shelf abutting the massive Thwaites Glacier is cracking and could break up within the next few years".
    Systemic Functional Grammar is a theory introduced by M.A.K. Halliday, Australian linguist. This theory is still relatively new, although Halliday published it in the 80s. SFG is a grammatical theory that emphasizes the function or role of language itself. In SFG theory, humans use language with the aim of fulfilling three functions in their lives known as metafunctions, namely a function to represent experience called an ideational function, a function to exchange experiences called an interpersonal function, and a function to organize experience called a textual function. Ideational functions are further divided into two, namely experiential functions and logical functions. This paper only discusses logical functions in SFG theory. Logical Function is a function related to the logical relationship between one clause and another, which includes two aspects, namely interdependency relations and logico-semantic relations. Both aspects will be explained in detail in this paper.
    1.
    The present continuous tense is also known as the present progressive tense. Quoted from Grammarly, the present continuous tense is a sentence that shows an action or event that is happening now, happens often, and can continue into the future...and in this artcle "global warming were a fact, they did happen, as the article says, "As bad as it looks now, the glacial melt may occur after the middle of the century — and sea-level rise promises to be even worse after the mid-century." the year 2100," the researchers have collected data from the past year, the present, they have even made some predictions for the next few years, even so, we must remain vigilant, and must maintain the balance of nature.
    2.There are many verbs in the article, to make it easier for the reader to understand
    3.we as humans must pay more attention to the impact of everything we do because, if we don't pay attention to the surrounding environment, we are worried that we will damage nature and our children and grandchildren will not be able to enjoy the beauty of nature that exists today
    4. This article is not liked by all people, but will be very liked by certain circles, such as parents and teachers who are teaching and providing education for their children, and will also be liked by readers who like English, because there are many interesting grammars in it.
    1. The most tenses in the article used by the writer are simple present tense, present continuous tense, and simple future tense.
    In this article, the writer explain that ice at the North Pole or "the world massive ice stores" is melting right now.
    It's also described as the simple future tense cause the article states that there will be a substantial increase boost in rising sea levels if the enormous mass of glacial ice that the shelf currently holds back will move toward the sea at three times its current rate. according to Oregon State University's Erin Pettit, who presented this month new satellite images showing that the eastern ice shelf abutting the massive Thwaites Glacier is cracking and could break up within the next few years.
    2. *Auxiliary Verb
    →Emphasize Auxiliary
    (Do)
    *Linking Verb
