CLAUSE: DEFINITION AND TYPES    

  there are some definitions of clauses. A clause consists of a group of words that include a subject and a finite verb that are a subject and a verb. It is divided into two: independent and dependent. Independent clause has meaning and it could stand alone as a sentence. If there are two independent clauses. They can be connected by the coordinators such as and, but, so, or, nor, for*, yet*. 

    On the other hand, the dependent clause can not function its own. It makes the independent clause to be a complete sentence. Therefore, it is called a subordinate clause. The subordinators do the work of connecting the dependent clause to another clause to complete the sentence. They include relative pronouns, subordinating conjunctions, and noun clause markers.

    The dependent clause is divided into 3 types. They are a noun clause, an adjective clause, and an adverbial clause. A noun clause is a clause that replaces a noun and begins with “how,” “that,” or WH-words (What, Who, Where, When, Why, Which, Whose and Whom), if, whether, etc. An example of a noun clause is as follows: 

I bring a bag. It is bought by my parents. 

I bring what my parents bought. 

    An adjective clause means a clause that modifies Nouns. It has similar qualities as an adjective. Thus, it is known as a relative clause. An example of a noun clause that still uses the similar example of noun clause: 

I bring a bag. It is bought by my parents.

I bring a bag that is bought by my parents.  

    At last, the adverbial clause could be used to modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs. Its example is as follows: 

I bring a bag at a lightning weight.
