This book is designed for beginner-level students, and it focuses on developing reading and writing skills. There are 10 units in the book, and each unit has two main sections: reading and writing. Each unit also includes vocabulary development and critical thinking exercises. The book uses a topic-based and task-based learning approach. Each unit has a specific topic, like success, health, or communication. Students practice reading texts, answering questions, and then writing short paragraphs or essays based on the topic. One strength of this book is the way it connects reading and writing. Students first read and understand the topic, and then they apply that knowledge in writing. This helps them develop their language naturally. The visuals in the book, such as pictures and graphs, are also helpful. They make the material more interesting and give context before reading. The vocabulary section introduces new words and teaches students how to use them in context. Another great feature is the focus on critical thinking. The book asks students to compare ideas, give opinions, and reflect on what they read. This is important for developing deeper understanding.
Overall, we think this book is very suitable for English learners, especially at the beginner level. The language is simple, the topics are relevant, and the exercises are useful for building reading and writing skills step by step.

We analyzed the textbook "My Next Words" (Grade 1) as part of our practice in evaluating textbooks by native authors. The analysis focuses on content suitability, assessment, activities, as well as the strengths, weaknesses, and challenges.
1. Content Suitability
The content is mostly aligned with curriculum goals and supports 21st-century learning, such as diversity, critical thinking, and character values. The topics are familiar and meaningful for children (e.g., daily life, school, family). However, some topics overlap (e.g., fruits appear in a family-themed unit), which can cause confusion. Also, some materials are not updated and lack references.
2. Assessment
This book includes formative and summative evaluations, but they are limited. Some units have evaluations that don't clearly reflect the learning objectives. There's a need for better alignment between exercises and expected outcomes.
3. Activities & Content
The book offers a variety of activities (songs, board games, role-plays, etc.) that support different learning styles. It uses attractive visuals, short texts, and games that motivate students. However, it lacks activities to build higher-order thinking and real-life interaction with authentic English (e.g., native speaker audio).
4. Strengths
Visually appealing and child-friendly design
Emphasizes diversity and character building
Balanced development of 4 language skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing)
5. Weaknesses
Lacks pronunciation and native input
Many typos and grammar inconsistencies
Limited teacher support and digital integration
Needs better sequence and evaluation structure
6. Challenges
Overdependence on textbook without digital media
Teachers may struggle to supplement materials due to limited resources
Textbook does not fully engage students in intercultural learning
Conclusion:
My Next Words is a solid textbook for young learners with engaging content and visuals. Still, it needs improvement in vocabulary accuracy, evaluation quality, and digital support to enhance students’ learning experiences.

Written Report
Analysis of the BIG Textbook of EYL Based on EYL Group 7 Presentation
1. Introduction
English for Young Learners (EYL) has become an important part of children's education. Textbooks are the main tools used in classrooms to help children learn English. However, not all textbooks are perfect. In this report, we analyze the BIG Textbook of EYL using the criteria from presentation by Group 7. This report uses simple English to help readers understand better.
2. Appearance and Design
The BIG Textbook of EYL has many colorful pictures that are attractive to children. The layout is simple and easy to follow. According to the material of 7th group, good design is important to make children interested and help them understand better. This book meets that standard because the pictures are clear and age-appropriate.
3. Content and Language
The content in the textbook includes basic vocabulary such as animals, colors, and classroom objects. The language is simple and suitable for young learners. However, the book does not always include content that connects to students’ real-life experiences. The material of group 7 recommends that textbooks should use language and topics that are useful in daily life. This is one area the book could improve.
4. Activities and Methodologies
The textbook includes activities such as matching words, coloring, and repetition. While these are useful, they are not very interactive. The presentation suggests that good textbooks should include games, songs, group tasks, and other fun activities. These methods help children stay engaged and improve their communication skills. The BIG Textbook of EYL needs more of these kinds of activities.
5. Role of the Textbook in Learning
This textbook helps teachers by providing structured lessons and basic exercises. It supports vocabulary and simple grammar learning. However, it lacks extra tools such as audio for pronunciation practice or videos to support listening skills. According to the material, an ideal EYL textbook should offer full support for both students and teachers.
6. Advantages of the Textbook
- Colorful and attractive design
- Simple language for beginners
- Structured and organized lessons
- Easy to use for both students and teachers
7. Disadvantages of the Textbook
- Few interactive and fun activities
- No digital materials like audio or video
- Lacks real-life and modern content
- Not much support for teachers to be creative
8. Conclusion
The BIG Textbook of EYL is a good starting point for teaching English to young learners. It has clear pictures, simple language, and a good structure. However, to meet the standards described in the material, the book should include more interactive activities, digital support, and updated content. By improving these areas, the book can become a more effective and engaging resource for both teachers and students.

This visual style also reflects a fun and communicative learning approach, in accordance with the characteristics of learning in early childhood.

Based on the previous material on textbook unit evaluation, the BIG Textbook of EYL by native speakers has generally fulfilled many important aspects recommended to support English learning for early childhood.
In terms of design and appearance, the book features attractive illustrations and bright colors that match the world of children, thus increasing students' motivation and interest in learning.
The materials presented are also relevant to children's daily lives and in accordance with their level of cognitive development, use simple and easy-to-understand language, and integrate the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in a gradual and balanced manner.
In addition, this book provides a variety of interactive activities such as games, songs, role-play, and storytelling that strongly support a communicative and child-centered learning approach. These activities are designed for children to actively participate, interact and practice English in a fun way, in accordance with EYL learning principles that emphasize repetition, multisensory and real context. Teacher's books and other supporting materials are also available to assist teachers in managing learning more effectively.
However, in terms of compatibility with digital technology, this BIG Textbook can still be further developed, for example by adding QR codes or access to audio-visual media that can enrich children's learning experience outside the classroom. In addition, although the materials and methods are excellent, the successful implementation of this book in Indonesia is highly dependent on teacher readiness, local cultural adaptation, as well as facility and parental support, given the challenging learning context in Indonesia.
Thus, it can be concluded that the BIG Textbook of EYL by native speakers has met most of the criteria for evaluating an ideal EYL textbook according to the previous material on textbook unit evaluation, especially in terms of design, content, skill development, and interactive and communicative learning methods. However, to optimize its use in Indonesia, there is a need for teacher training, contextual adaptation, and the development of digital supporting media so that English language learning for early childhood can be more effective and enjoyable.

1. In terms of content suitability, the material presented is in accordance with the EYL curriculum, contains moral values such as politeness, maintaining cleanliness, and caring for the environment, and links learning with other knowledge such as science and social. The themes raised are also varied and very relevant to children's daily lives.
2. In terms of language suitability, the language used is simple, communicative, and easy for children to understand. There is a special section for pronunciation exercises (phonics), but as mentioned earlier, listening and pronunciation exercises will be more effective if accompanied by native speaker audio sources. This is also one of the shortcomings found in the textbook analysis paper.
3. For learning activities, this book is very rich in a variety of activities that actively involve students, such as listening, speaking, drawing, role-playing, and making projects. These activities are very appropriate for the characteristics of early childhood who need active and fun learning. In addition, at the end of each unit there is a review and self-assessment that helps students and teachers evaluate their understanding of the material.
4. In terms of design, this book is very visually appealing, with contextual illustrations, a neat layout, and the use of bright colors. This certainly helps create a positive and fun learning atmosphere. However, as mentioned, this book does not yet provide additional digital material support such as videos, applications, or audio sources that can be accessed independently by students.
5. Formative Assessment: Carried out during the learning process through interactive activities such as listen and find, act and say, draw and say, and small projects in each unit. Teachers observe students' involvement and understanding directly, so they can provide immediate feedback. Summative Assessment: Carried out at the end of the unit using the review and self-assessment provided in the book. This assessment measures the overall achievement of competencies in the unit.

1. Age and Developmental Level Appropriateness:
Language: This textbook uses simple English that young children can easily understand. The sentences are short, and the words are basic and related to their lives. However, assessing whether the difficulty level remains consistent and balanced throughout the book is essential. Some sections may be too manageable, while others may be too difficult for some children.
Content: The topics covered, such as family, colors, numbers, body parts, locations around, food, clothing, and weather, are very relevant to children's lives. However, further assessment is needed to ensure that none of the materials are too complex or tedious for children.
2. Interactive Learning Methods:
The textbook incorporates various interactive learning techniques, such as:
Songs: There are “Listen and Sing” instructions in some sections.
Stories: A “Story” section can be used to tell stories.
Games: Many of the activities are designed in a game format, such as “Play a game”, “Listen and find”, “Look and match”, and others.
Contextual and Real Learning:
Most of the content in this book is closely related to children's daily lives, covering topics such as family, school, food, and daily routines. This makes it easier for children to understand and apply the lessons learned.
Balanced Language Skill Development:
The book attempts to equally develop all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing). However, further review of the time allocation for each skill is needed to achieve the ideal balance. The writing segment is currently limited to basic exercises such as matching words and constructing short sentences.
Variety of Exercises and Evaluation:
The book provides a variety of alternative exercises and assessments, including multiple-choice questions, matching pictures, filling in word blanks, and others. However, it is necessary to evaluate whether the type and number of exercises are sufficient to assess the child's overall ability. A more in-depth explanation of the application of formative and summative evaluation should also be added.
Compatibility with Digital Technology:
The book does not offer digital features such as QR codes or links to audiovisual materials. However, digital technology can enhance a child's learning experience and provide additional opportunities for learning at home.
Conclusions:
Overall, the BIG English Starter textbook attempts to meet the criteria. However, some elements still need to be improved, such as ensuring a balance in the difficulty level of the materials, expanding the types of writing exercises, providing more structured formative and summative assessments, and adopting digital technology to enhance children's learning experience.

The BIG ENGLISH book provided has a very attractive appearance for young learners. From our observation, the colorful design, large font size, and cheerful illustrations make this book very suitable for elementary school students. We think that this visual appearance helps to increase students' interest in learning and makes them more focused when using the book in class. As for the structure, the book is neatly organized and each unit has clear learning objectives. We feel that this makes it easier for teachers, especially novice teachers, to organize the flow of teaching. Information is presented in stages, and sections such as review and evaluation are helpful in monitoring students' progress.
The teaching methods in this book are communicative and involve students actively. There are many activities that encourage students to speak, listen, read and write in English. We agree that this approach suits the characteristics of young learners who absorb language more easily through direct experience and play activities. The activities in this book are also very varied, ranging from role play, matching pictures, singing, to small projects. In our opinion, activities like these not only strengthen language skills, but also build students' confidence and social skills. The book is also flexible, as it provides additional materials such as audio, flashcards, and teacher's guide, which is certainly very helpful for teachers in modifying learning.
In terms of content, the vocabulary taught is relevant to children's daily lives. Topics such as family, school, food and animals make it easier for students to understand and relate the material to their own experiences. We think that topics close to children's world are very important to create meaningful learning.
However, although this book is already excellent in many aspects, we feel that the form of assessment in it can still be improved. The assessments available are mostly in the form of written exercises, while speaking and listening skills need to be further strengthened with more specific assessment instruments.
Therefore, based on our analysis, overall this BIG ENGLISH book is a very suitable textbook for English learning for children. The book is not only attractive in appearance, but also supports an active and communicative learning approach that suits the characteristics of young learners. Although there are some things that need to be adjusted, overall this book can be used as the main reference in teaching EYL and can be a good example of a textbook if used wisely and according to the classroom context.

We have analysed "Big English Starter" is an English learning book designed for beginners, focusing on the development of speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through a fun and interactive approach. It emphasizes interactive learning via games and activities that engage students while concentrating on essential vocabulary and simple sentence structures crucial for everyday communication.
The book is organized into several units that cover various topics, such as introductions, family, food, and daily activities, each accompanied by diverse exercises, including speaking, listening, and grammar practice. It features engaging visuals, using numerous images and illustrations to capture students' attention, and employs simple language to facilitate comprehension for beginners.
The methodology follows a communicative approach, emphasizing the use of language in real-life contexts, allowing students to practice speaking from an early stage, and encourages group work and interaction among students. While the fun and interactive approach makes learning enjoyable, it may be less comprehensive for those who already possess a foundational knowledge of English.

Analysis of the BIG Textbook of EYL Based on for Children's English Learning
1. General Appearance
This book is very visually appealing! The cover is bright and fun, the font is large and clear. Suitable for children who are just starting to learn English. Kids will definitely feel like this is a play book, not a scary textbook.
2. Layout and Design
Each unit has a clear pattern and is easy to follow. The illustrations are not only cute but also help children understand the content. The layout is easy on the eyes and not confusing.
3. Methodology
The methodology is truly learner-centered. There are songs, pictures, games, and fun projects that make children active, not just sitting quietly listening.
4. Activities
The activities are varied and very suitable for children who are not yet proficient in reading or writing. There is coloring, matching, singing, and creative projects. Kids can learn while they play
5. Language Skills
This book really focuses on listening and speaking, but still has a bit of reading and writing. The audio is interesting and suitable for children. So all skills are practiced, although not too heavy.
6. Language Content
The vocabulary is very relevant: colors, numbers, food, family, and so on. All the language is very much in line with the children's world and its use in real situations.
7. Topic Content
The topics are very familiar to children, and there are no stereotypes. Children are also encouraged to express themselves, for example through the “My Family Poster” project.
8. Teachability and Flexibility
The book comes with a lot of supplementary materials such as audio, flashcards, and additional worksheets. It can be used in various classroom situations, but teachers still need to be creative in adding additional exercises, especially for reading and writing.
9. Assessment
There are reviews and checkpoints in some units, although they are not very deep. But we think this is suitable because the level is still Starter, and children at this stage are more focused on the learning experience first.
10. Practical Considerations
Accessibly, the book is available online and in print, but it is a bit expensive if not subsidized by the school.
In conclusion, Big English Starter is a very suitable book for children's learning. It's engaging, communicative, flexible, and suits their needs. Although it still lacks formal assessment or explicit grammar, that's exactly what makes this book suitable for the early stages of language development. Kids can learn while they play, and that's the most important thing.

Analysis of the textbook "BIG English Starter Pupil's Book" based on Paul Dickinson's theory is:
The textbook "BIG English Starter Pupil's Book" shows several characteristics designed to attract and educate young learners.
• In general, the book has an attractive appearance with a brightly colored cover and friendly illustrations, which aim to attract students' attention. The font size and type used are appropriate for young readers, increasing readability, although excessive use of color or too busy illustrations may distract some students, and poor print quality may reduce the visual appeal of the book.
• In terms of layout and design, the book is well structured, with each unit organized and providing a useful overview, which helps students and teachers understand the learning objectives. Clear instructions and supporting illustrations facilitate understanding of tasks, and variety in illustrations maintains students' interest. However, a layout that is too rigid may reduce the flexibility of use, and an inconsistent design may confuse students. • The methodology used in this textbook is learner-centred, emphasizing active engagement through games and interactive activities, which is appropriate for young learners and gives teachers the flexibility to adapt lessons. However, effective implementation may require additional training for some teachers, and poor management of activities may lead to discipline problems.
• The textbook is rich in varied and engaging activities, which develop a range of skills and accommodate students of different ability levels, while encouraging interaction and creativity. However, some activities may require extensive preparation, and the poor structure may make it difficult for students to stay focused.
• In terms of language skills, the textbook provides a good balance between the four language skills, with authentic listening materials and engaging reading materials. This provides a solid foundation in language learning, but some students may need additional materials for certain skills, and listening materials that are too difficult may lead to frustration.
• The language content in this textbook is authentic and relevant, using language appropriate to the students’ ability levels and focusing on useful language functions. It helps students learn practical English, but some students may benefit from exposure to more complex language, and language that is too simple may not adequately prepare them for more challenging communication.
• The topic content in this textbook is realistic and engaging, encouraging self-expression, independent thinking, and active learning, while avoiding stereotypes and promoting inclusivity. Relevant topics motivate students, but some topics may require cultural adjustment, and less challenging topics may diminish interest.
• The teaching power and flexibility of this textbook are supported by additional resources, such as audio CDs, and its suitability for classes of varying levels and sizes. However, teachers may need training to make the most of these resources, and reliance on additional materials may increasethe workload.
• Assessment is facilitated by the assessment materials provided, which help track student progress, although additional guidance on the use of assessment materials may be needed, and assessments that focus narrowly on written tests may not reflect students’ abilities comprehensively.
• Finally, practical considerations regarding the price of textbooks (around Rp242,000) and their availability need to be evaluated in terms of affordability and accessibility, as high prices may hinder access for some families, and limited availability may make it difficult for students to obtain the books.

As a textbook for young learners, English Starter is very engaging and functional. Its design is colorful, and it features cute illustrations that are sure to appeal to children. For example, there is an illustration on the front page of children playing with animals that are not afraid, which makes the book feel friendly. The font is also large, clear, and easy for early readers to follow.
The content is comprehensive and well-structured. Each unit covers familiar daily life topics for children, such as family, birthdays, and favorite dishes. This makes the material easier to understand because it connects to their personal experiences. For instance, in the “Happy Birthday!” unit, children are invited to learn through a party context, including toy names, parks, and cinemas. This method is smart because it makes learning fun and memorable.
Activities are very diverse—even small projects such as singing, drawing, role-playing, and making family posters or healthy food plates. These are useful for children with different learning styles—auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. For example, in Unit 3 “I like cake!”, children are not only invited to memorize food names but also to practice saying “I like pizza” while drawing their favorite food. Exciting!
However, there are a few areas that could be improved. First, the book does not touch on technology at all. In today’s digital age, it would be great to include interactive training or animated video apps. Second, despite the creative activities, some tasks may require more teacher assistance, especially in large classes with students of varying abilities.
Overall, English Starter is a great book for introducing English. Children will enjoy learning while staying relaxed and engaged. However, the book could be even better if developed with digital features or additional teaching guidelines for educators.
Strengths:
The BIG Textbook of EYL by Native has several strengths, including its colorful and attractive visuals, varied activities such as singing and role-playing, and the use of simple language that suits children. The book also integrates all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) in a balanced way, with a neat and easy-to-understand layout.
Weaknesses:
However, the book also has weaknesses, such as the lack of local cultural context, which makes the content less relevant to the lives of Indonesian children. Instructions for teachers are still incomplete, which can be challenging for novice teachers. Additionally, the assessment formats are not varied, and there are no adjustments for different student ability levels. The connection between units is also not strong, making the material progression feel disjointed.

The book is organized into thematic units, such as "My Family” and “Happy Birthday”, which provide a contextual framework for learning and make the content easier for children to understand. Introduction and Vocabulary Component The textbook stands out as a comprehensively designed English language learning resource specifically tailored for young learners, boasting an organized structure that facilitates language acquisition. A foundational element that prominently features throughout the book is its vocabulary component. Within each unit, the textbook systematically introduces a curated set of new words that are both relevant and contextually appropriate to the unit's theme. For instance, the "Welcome to Class!" unit not only introduces numbers from 1 to 10 but also thoughtfully links them with basic colors like black, blue, and red, as well as common classroom objects such as bags, books, and pencils. This approach is consistently applied to subsequent units; "My Family" delves into lexicon related to family members like dad, mum, and siblings, while "I Like Cake!" meticulously presents food and drink vocabulary familiar to children, including cake, chicken, and ice cream. This ensures that vocabulary acquisition is not merely cumulative but also functional and directly applicable to the learners' daily experiences.
Structures (Grammar) Component Beyond vocabulary acquisition, the textbook dedicates significant attention to Structures, or grammar, recognizing its pivotal role in effective communication. Each unit progressively introduces and practices essential sentence structures, starting from the most fundamental elements. Initially, learners are guided to master basic greetings such as "Hello." and "Goodbye.", as well as how to inquire about and state names ("What's your name? My name's (Lidya).") and ages ("How old are you? I'm (six)."). As units advance, the complexity of structures gradually increases, encompassing questions about color preferences ("What's your favourite colour? My favourite colour is (red)."), object identification ("What's this? It's a book. It's a (black) book."), and even introducing other people ("Who's this? This is my (mum). / This is me."). This step-by-step methodology enables learners to build a solid grammatical understanding, progressing from simple declarative sentences to more intricate questions and responses, thereby forming a robust foundation for both oral and written expression.
Phonics Component Another crucial aspect integrated within this textbook is its Phonics component, which specifically focuses on developing pronunciation and understanding the relationship between sounds and letters. While the precise details regarding specific sounds and phonics activities are not exhaustively outlined in the provided table of contents snippets, the consistent inclusion of a "Phonics" column in every unit strongly suggests that the book places a significant emphasis on listening and speaking skills. This component is critically important for young learners as it aids them in building phonological awareness, a fundamental prerequisite for developing reading and spelling abilities. Through regular phonics practice, learners are expected to accurately distinguish and produce English sounds, which in turn reduces communication barriers and boosts their confidence in speaking English.
Values Component A distinguishing feature of this textbook is the thoughtful integration of a Values component, extending its scope beyond mere language instruction. The "Values" section in each unit is specifically designed to instill character education or moral lessons pertinent to the unit's overarching theme. For instance, a unit centered on family might underscore the importance of mutual love and respect, while a unit discussing food could highlight the significance of sharing or healthy eating habits.
Although the specific values need to be explored further within the detailed unit content, the presence of this component clearly indicates that the textbook developers acknowledge the vital role of values education in a child's holistic development. Consequently, English language learning becomes not only a means for communication but also a vehicle for shaping the character and ethics of young learners, aligned with relevant cultural and social contexts.
DeleteProject Component and Conclusion Finally, each unit within this textbook is structured to culminate in an innovative Project section. The "Project" column in the table of contents suggests that these projects offer practical opportunities for students to apply the language skills they have acquired in creative and meaningful contexts. These projects can vary widely, ranging from crafting simple presentations or making handmade items to engaging in role-play activities, all of which leverage the vocabulary, structures, and pronunciation learned. This project-based approach not only reinforces learning but also fosters critical thinking, collaboration, and self-expression. In summation, the "BIG textbook of EYL by native.pdf" adopts a holistic approach to English language teaching, ensuring that learners not only master fundamental linguistic elements such as vocabulary, grammar, and phonics but also develop essential values and practical skills through engaging, project-based activities, making it a comprehensive and effective learning resource.

- There are songs, games, storytelling, and TPR (Total Physical Response) activities.
- The material is organized from simple to more complex.

ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, the BIG English Starter textbook is a well-designed and engaging book for young learners who are just beginning to learn English. When I first looked at the contents, I noticed that the book is divided into several interesting and familiar themes such as “My Family,” “Happy Birthday,” “I Like Cake,” “My Body,” and “Around Town.” These topics are very relatable for children, so they can easily connect the lessons to their everyday experiences. For example, in the “My Family” unit, students learn basic vocabulary like “brother,” “sister,” “mom,” and “dad,” which helps them talk about the people closest to them. The “Happy Birthday” unit introduces words like “ball,” “cake,” and “present,” which are fun and exciting for young learners.
I also think it’s very effective that each unit includes a clear focus on vocabulary, grammar structures, and CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning). The grammar used in this book is very simple and appropriate for children, such as “What’s your name?”, “This is me,” or “I like (pizza).” These phrases are short, practical, and often repeated throughout the lessons, making it easier for students to remember and use them in real conversations. The CLIL sections are a great addition because they introduce other subjects like science, social studies, and art. For instance, students learn about hygiene in the “My Body” unit or healthy food in “I Like Cake.” This way, children are not only learning English, but also gaining knowledge in other areas, which makes the learning more meaningful and integrated.
One thing I really like about this book is that it’s very colorful and full of images that attract children’s attention. The layout is simple but effective, and the lessons are supported with songs, drawing activities, and projects that encourage creativity and active participation. I believe that young learners need this kind of approach because they learn best through play, movement, and hands-on experiences. The book also includes checkpoints and review units that help both teachers and students review what has been learned and make sure the learning goals are being achieved.
In conclusion, I think BIG English Starter is not just a language textbook, but a complete learning tool that supports children’s development in a fun and educational way. The material is suitable for their age and level, and it builds a strong foundation in English through topics that are both enjoyable and educational. It also encourages learners to express themselves, interact with others, and explore the world around them while using the English language.
